Password Protecting PDFs

PDFs often contain info that needs protection, confidential business data, personal info, sensitive reports, proprietary content. This gives complete control over who can access docs and what they can do. Set a strong password that users must enter before opening, ensuring only authorized people can view.

Upload

Click upload. Pick the PDF you want to protect, or several at once. Shows basic file info. The file is encrypted on our server and deleted right after processing.

User Password

Required to open PDF:

• Enter a strong password of up to 128 characters
• Type it a second time to confirm, so a typo cannot lock you out
• A hint reminds you to use a long, unique password

Owner Password (Automatic)

Additional control:

• A separate owner password is created automatically to enforce the permissions
• You never need to manage it
• It differs from your open password, so readers cannot change the permissions

Encryption Strength

Level of protection:

• AES 256 bit: Every file is encrypted with AES 256, the strongest encryption in the PDF standard.

Permissions

Control what users can do:

• Printing: allow or block printing
• Content copying: prevent or allow text and image copying
• Document modification: block or permit editing
• Annotation: allow or disallow comments and markups

Process

Settings configured:

• Click "Protect PDF"
• Encrypts document with your password and permissions
• Click download to save the protected PDF, named with -protected
• Original unchanged as backup

Testing

After downloading, test:

• Try opening without password (should fail)
• Open with correct password (should succeed)
• Test restricted functions like printing or copying
• Verify permissions work as expected
• Ensure content remains intact

Password Recovery

Since protection is strong:

• Store passwords in secure password manager
• Share through secure channels only
• Keep the password safe: we never store it and cannot recover it
• Keep backup copies of unprotected originals
• Document which permissions were applied

• Enter correct current password

Need to take a password off again later? Remove the PDF password with the password you set, and you get an open copy without restrictions. If you want readers to see that a document is confidential even when it is open, add a watermark to the PDF, such as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, before you protect it.
