To organize PDF pages, open the file in a page organizer, drag the page thumbnails into the order you want, rotate or delete the pages that need it, and save a new PDF. The quickest free way is the WoowPDF Organize PDF tool, which runs in your browser, so the document is never uploaded. This guide walks through it step by step and shows the alternatives in Adobe Acrobat and macOS Preview.
How to organize PDF pages online, step by step
- Open the organizer. Go to Organize PDF and drop your file on the page, or click to choose it. Files up to 100 MB work.
- Wait for the thumbnails. Every page appears as a small preview, numbered in its current order.
- Drag pages into place. Press on a thumbnail and drag it to its new position. The other pages move aside.
- Rotate what is sideways. Use the arrows under a page to turn it 90° left or right, or the Rotate all buttons when the whole scan came out the wrong way.
- Duplicate or delete. Duplicate page repeats a page, for example a cover sheet. Delete page greys a page out; click again to restore it before you save.
- Save changes. Click Save changes and download the file, named after the original with -organized at the end. The result shows how many pages were kept, so you can check the count.
Nothing is re-rendered: the original pages are copied into the new file, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality.
Organize PDF files that come from several documents
A page organizer works on one PDF at a time. When the pages you want to arrange are spread over several files, combine them first:
- Merge the PDFs into one document.
- Open the merged file in Organize PDF and arrange all pages on one board.
- If you need some pages as a separate file afterwards, use Split PDF.
Which page tool should you use?
| You want to | Best tool |
|---|---|
| Reorder, rotate, duplicate and delete in one go | Organize PDF |
| Only change the page order | Reorder PDF |
| Only remove pages, or all odd or even pages | Delete PDF pages |
| Only fix sideways or upside down pages | Rotate PDF |
| Put pages from several files together | Merge PDF, then organize |
How to rearrange pages in a PDF with Adobe Acrobat or Mac Preview
Adobe Acrobat
In Acrobat Pro or Standard, open the file and choose the Organize Pages tool. Thumbnails of all pages appear; drag them to a new position, use the rotate and delete icons, then save. The free Acrobat Reader can view PDFs but cannot reorder their pages.
Preview on a Mac
Open the PDF in Preview, choose View, Thumbnails, and drag the thumbnails in the sidebar into the new order. You can rotate a selected page with the rotate button and press Delete to remove it. Save with File, Save or Export as PDF.
Windows, Chromebook and phones
Windows and ChromeOS have no built in way to reorder PDF pages, and phone PDF viewers usually only display files. An online organizer that runs in the browser, such as Organize PDF, works the same on all of them, including phones and tablets.
Common situations and quick fixes
- Double sided scan in the wrong order. Feeders often scan all fronts and then all backs. Drag each back page next to its front, or scan the backs in reverse order next time.
- Appendix in the middle. Drag the appendix pages to the end, then add page numbers so the numbering matches the new order.
- Blank pages from a scanner. Delete them on the board before saving.
- A form that needs the same page twice. Use Duplicate page instead of scanning it again.
- Sideways landscape tables. Rotate those pages only, so the report reads straight through.
Tips before you share the organized PDF
- Fix the order first and rotate second: sideways pages are easier to spot once everything is in sequence.
- A password protected PDF has to be unlocked before its pages can be rearranged. If you know the password, remove it first.
- Keep the original until you have checked the organized copy page by page.
- If the final file is too large for email, compress the PDF as the last step.
