Add Header and Footer to PDF

Add Header and Footer places the same line of text at the top and bottom of every page in your PDF. Use it to label a report with its title, mark a document as a draft, add your company name, stamp today's date or number the pages in the footer. Everything happens in your browser: your PDF is never uploaded, so internal documents stay on your device.

How to add a header and footer to a PDF

1. Add your PDF. Drop one or more files onto the upload area or click to choose them.
2. Type your text. Enter the header text and the footer text. Leave either box empty if you only need one of them.
3. Choose the extras. Switch on today's date for the header and page numbers for the footer, pick left, center or right alignment and set the text size.

Options explained

• Header text and footer text: up to 200 characters each, such as a document title, a client name, a version number or a confidentiality note.
• Date in the header: adds today's date next to your header text, written in your device's date format.
• Page numbers in the footer: adds a count such as 3 / 12 next to your footer text. For other number formats or positions, use Add Page Numbers to PDF instead.
• Alignment: left, center or right, applied to both the header and the footer so the page looks balanced.
• Text size: from 6 to 24 points. Small sizes around 9 or 10 points look neat on most documents.

• Business reports: repeat the report title and your company name on every page, so printed pages are never mixed up.
• Drafts and reviews: add DRAFT or Internal use only in the header before you send a file round for comments.

Tips for a clean result

• Check that your document has some white space at the top and bottom. The text is placed close to the page edge and can overlap content that runs to the edge.
• Text in Arabic, Hindi, Chinese and other scripts is supported and drawn with your browser's fonts.
• If the file is password protected, unlock it first with Remove PDF Password, using the password you know.
