To increase PDF size, open the free Increase PDF Size tool, add your PDF, pick a minimum such as 200 KB and click the button. You get a new PDF of at least that size, and every page, word and image looks exactly as before. The work happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
This guide explains why portals ask for a minimum size, how the tool makes a file bigger without touching its content, and what to do if the portal still says no.
Why would you need to increase PDF size?
Most people fight to make a PDF smaller, so a portal saying a file is too small is confusing. It happens more than you would think:
- Application and exam forms sometimes accept documents only within a range, for example between 100 KB and 300 KB.
- Scanned certificates saved at low quality can fall below the minimum the form asks for.
- Text only PDFs exported from Word are often just 20 KB to 60 KB, far below a 100 KB floor.
- Older portals use the size as a rough check that a real scan was attached, not a blank page.
Whatever the reason, the fix is the same: raise the file size to the required minimum without changing what the document shows.
How to increase PDF size (step by step)
- Open Increase PDF Size.
- Add one PDF, or several at once if you have a batch of certificates.
- Choose the minimum size: 100 KB, 200 KB, 300 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB, or type any custom value from 10 KB up to 50 MB.
- Click the button and download the new file. Its name ends with the size you chose, for example
marksheet-200kb.pdf. - Check the size in your file manager, then upload it to the portal.
If a file is already larger than the size you picked, the tool leaves it unchanged.
How does the tool make a PDF bigger without changing it?
The PDF format lets a program store private application data inside the file, in a place PDF viewers simply skip (the document catalog's PieceInfo entry, part of the PDF standard since version 1.3). The tool adds exactly enough of this hidden data to reach your target.
That means:
- Pages are untouched. Text, images, signatures and layout are byte for byte what they were.
- Text stays selectable and searchable, exactly as in the original.
- The padding is random data, so portals that zip or compress uploads still see the full size instead of shrinking it back.
We deliberately avoid the common trick of re-scanning or upscaling images. That would make the document blurry or change how it looks, and some portals compare the file against what you entered.
Increase PDF size to a specific KB: quick reference
| Portal asks for | Pick | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| At least 50 KB | Custom: 60 | A little headroom avoids rounding issues |
| 100 KB to 200 KB | 100 KB or Custom: 150 | Stay comfortably inside the range |
| Minimum 200 KB | 200 KB | The default choice |
| 300 KB to 500 KB | 300 KB | Then check it stays under the maximum |
| At least 1 MB | 1 MB | Useful for some archive uploads |
Portals often measure 1 KB as 1,000 bytes while Windows shows 1,024 bytes, so a file right on the limit can look different in two places. Aim a bit above the minimum and below the maximum.
How to check a PDF's file size before you upload
Check the size on your own device before you upload, so you know which minimum to choose and can confirm the new file afterwards.
- Windows: right click the PDF and choose Properties. Use the Size line, not "Size on disk", which is rounded up to the disk's block size. In File Explorer you can also switch to the Details view to see the size column for every file at once.
- Mac: select the PDF in Finder and press Command + I (Get Info). The size is shown in KB or MB with the exact byte count next to it.
- iPhone and iPad: open the Files app, touch and hold the PDF, then tap Get Info.
- Android: open your Files app and tap the three dot menu or long press the file, then choose Details or Info.
Remember the rounding point from above: if the portal's minimum is 200 KB, a file showing exactly 200 KB on Windows is 204,800 bytes and passes either way, but a file showing 196 KB might fail. When in doubt, choose the next size up.
What if your PDF is too big instead?
Portals with a size range can reject files on both sides. If your scan is over the maximum, use Compress PDF to 300 KB or the main Compress PDF tool, which can aim for any target size. Our guide on how to compress PDF files explains the settings in detail.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Encrypted" or password error | The PDF is protected | Remove the password first, then increase the size |
| Portal still says too small | It counts KB as 1,000 bytes or wants headroom | Choose the next size up, or a custom value 10 percent higher |
| Portal says too big now | You picked a size above its maximum | Pick a value inside the allowed range |
| Several files to fix | A batch of documents | Add them all at once; each gets the same minimum |
Is it allowed to increase a PDF's size?
The tool does not change what your document says or shows, so it does not alter your certificate, marksheet or ID. It only adds hidden padding that viewers ignore. Always make sure the document itself is genuine and meets the portal's other rules, such as page count, colour and resolution. If a portal publishes upload instructions, follow those first; size is only one of the checks.
Ready to fix your upload? Open Increase PDF Size, pick your minimum and download a file the portal will accept.
Frequently asked questions
How can I increase the size of a PDF file in KB?
Use a tool that pads the file to a target size. WoowPDF's Increase PDF Size lets you pick 100 KB, 200 KB, 300 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or a custom value, and it keeps every page exactly as it was.
Does increasing PDF size reduce quality or change the content?
No. The tool adds hidden private data that PDF viewers ignore, so text, images and layout stay byte for byte the same. Text also stays selectable and searchable.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. Increase PDF Size runs entirely in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your device. That matters for ID cards, marksheets and other personal documents.
Why does a portal reject my PDF for being too small?
Some forms set a minimum size as a rough check that a real scan was attached. Text only PDFs and low quality scans can fall below that floor even though the document is fine.
Can I increase the size of several PDFs at once?
Yes. Add all the files together and choose one minimum size. Each file is padded to that size, and files already above it are left unchanged.
