To compress a PDF to 300 KB, open Compress PDF to 300 KB, add your file and click Compress. The tool tries several quality and resolution settings and returns the best looking version that fits under 300 KB, then shows you clearly whether the target was reached. No sign up, no watermark.
Below: why 300 KB limits are so common, how the target search works, how to keep scans readable, and what to do with stubborn files.
Why do so many forms ask for a PDF under 300 KB?
Government, university, job and exam portals receive huge numbers of documents, so they cap each file to keep storage and page loads under control. 300 KB is a popular limit for scanned certificates, marksheets, ID proofs and experience letters. A phone scan of a single page is often 1 MB to 4 MB, so it needs to shrink by 70 to 90 percent.
How to compress a PDF to 300 KB (step by step)
- Open Compress PDF to 300 KB. The target is already set to 300 KB.
- Add your PDF.
- Optional: switch on grayscale for black and white documents such as marksheets. Removing colour saves a lot of space and keeps text crisp.
- Click Compress and wait. Large scans can take up to a couple of minutes, because the tool tests several settings.
- Read the result line: Target 300 KB: reached means the file fits. Download it and upload it to the portal.
Need a different limit? The main Compress PDF tool has the same target mode and accepts any size from 10 KB to 100 MB, so it covers 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB and 1 MB limits too.
How the exact target size works
Most compressors offer fixed levels such as Low, Medium and Strong. You pick one, check the size, and try again if it is still too big, or end up with a blurry file that is far smaller than needed.
WoowPDF works the other way round. You give it the limit, and it searches for the setting that fits:
- It compresses images with different JPEG quality and resolution (DPI) combinations.
- It keeps the version with the highest quality that is still under 300 KB, ideally close to the limit rather than far below it.
- It stops early when shrinking no longer helps, for example when text and vector graphics, not images, make up the file.
The result is the sharpest file the portal will accept, without guesswork.
How to keep a compressed PDF readable
| Document | Best approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Black and white certificate or marksheet | Turn on grayscale | Colour data is wasted on black text |
| Colour ID card or photo page | Leave colour on | Faces and stamps need colour |
| Multi page scan (5+ pages) | Remove pages the form does not need first | Each scanned page costs size |
| Digital PDF from Word | Usually already small | Check the size before compressing |
For scans, the quality of the original matters most. Scan in good light, crop to the page edges and avoid shadows: a clean scan compresses far better than a dark, noisy photo.
How to compress a PDF to 300 KB on your phone
Most people scan certificates with a phone, so it is easiest to compress on the same phone. The tool works in any mobile browser, and because the heavy work happens on our server, even an older phone handles large scans.
- Scan to PDF first. On an iPhone, open the Files app, tap the three dot menu and choose Scan Documents. On Android, open Google Drive, tap + and choose Scan. Both create a PDF with the page edges cropped.
- Open the compressor in Safari or Chrome: Compress PDF to 300 KB.
- Add the PDF from Files or Downloads, turn on grayscale for black and white pages, and tap Compress.
- Save the result to Files or Downloads, then attach it in the portal.
Scanning apps already compress a little, so a one page phone scan usually reaches 300 KB easily while staying readable. If the portal also asks for a photo or signature in JPG, compress those separately, since a PDF compressor only handles PDFs.
What if the PDF will not go under 300 KB?
Sometimes the result says not reached. The usual causes and fixes:
- Too many pages. A 12 page scan cannot fit in 300 KB and stay readable. Keep only the pages the form asks for, or split the file and upload the parts separately if the portal allows it.
- Heavy colour photos. Turn on grayscale if colour is not required.
- Embedded fonts and vector drawings. These do not shrink like images. Export the PDF again from the original program with standard fonts, or print to PDF.
- Already compressed. A file that was squeezed before has little left to remove.
Our longer guide on how to compress PDF files covers each setting, and compressing a PDF for email handles attachment limits.
Too small instead of too big?
Some portals set a range, for example 100 KB to 300 KB, and reject files that are too small as well. If your PDF ends up under the minimum, use Increase PDF Size to raise it to the floor without changing any page. Our guide on how to increase PDF size walks through it.
Is it safe to compress documents online?
Target size compression needs real PDF processing power, so it runs on our server rather than in the browser. The file is sent over an encrypted connection and deleted as soon as your result is sent. We do not keep copies, and nothing is shared. For very sensitive files, remove pages you do not need before compressing, so less personal data is sent at all.
Ready? Open Compress PDF to 300 KB, add your file and get a PDF the portal will accept on the first try.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce a PDF to exactly 300 KB?
Use a compressor with a target size. WoowPDF's Compress PDF to 300 KB searches quality and resolution settings and returns the best version that fits under 300 KB, so you do not have to try levels one by one.
Will compressing to 300 KB make the text blurry?
Text in digital PDFs stays sharp. In scans, the text is part of an image, so very large reductions soften it slightly; turning on grayscale for black and white documents keeps it much crisper at the same size.
Why can't my PDF be compressed to 300 KB?
Too many pages, embedded fonts, vector graphics or an already compressed file can stop it shrinking further. Remove unneeded pages, use grayscale, or export the PDF again from the original program.
Is 300 KB measured the same everywhere?
Not always. Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and Windows counts 1,024, so aim slightly below the limit when the portal is strict. The tool keeps the result at or under 300 x 1,024 bytes.
Are my files stored after compression?
No. Files sent for compression are deleted as soon as the result is returned to you, and they are never shared.
