To change PDF orientation, rotate the pages that are sideways by 90 degrees and save the file, or, if the content itself is landscape, place each page on a portrait sheet so it fits upright. Both take under a minute for free with WoowPDF, and neither uploads your file.
The reason there are two methods is simple: "landscape to portrait" means different things depending on what is wrong with your PDF. Pick the right one first and you will not end up with text running up the side of the page.
Which orientation problem do you have?
Open the PDF and look at one problem page.
| What you see | What is wrong | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| The text reads sideways or upside down | The page was scanned or saved with the wrong rotation | Rotate the page |
| The text reads correctly, but the page is wide | The content really is landscape (a wide table, slide or chart) | Put it on a portrait sheet |
| Only a few pages are sideways | Mixed scan, or one landscape page added to a report | Rotate just those pages |
| It looks fine on screen but prints sideways | Printer settings, not the file | Change the print orientation |
If you are not sure, start with rotation. It is quick to undo: rotate the other way and save again.
Method 1: Rotate PDF pages to fix the orientation
Use this when pages are sideways or upside down, the classic result of scanning a stack of paper or photographing documents with a phone.
- Open Rotate PDF and add your file. Every page appears as a thumbnail.
- To fix the whole document, click Rotate all left or Rotate all right. Each click turns every page 90 degrees.
- To fix single pages, use the small rotate buttons on each thumbnail. A page that is upside down needs two clicks.
- Check the thumbnails: every page should read upright.
- Click the button to rotate and download the new PDF.
The rotation is saved into the file itself, so it stays correct in every PDF reader, in email previews and when you print. That is the difference from the rotate button in most PDF viewers, which only turns your view and forgets it when you close the file.
Rotating individual pages in a mixed PDF
Reports often mix portrait text pages with one or two landscape tables. If those tables were scanned sideways, rotate only those pages and leave the rest alone. Do not use rotate all in that case, or the correct pages will turn sideways.
While you are at it, you can also put pages in a different order or remove blank scans with Organize PDF.
Method 2: Change PDF from landscape to portrait without turning the content
Sometimes the page is not wrong, just wide. A slide deck exported to PDF, a spreadsheet saved as landscape, or a wide chart reads correctly, but you need portrait pages, for example because a portal only accepts A4 portrait or you want to print it as part of a portrait report.
Rotating would make the content sideways. Instead, place each page on a portrait sheet:
- Open Resize PDF and add the file.
- Choose the paper size: A4, Letter or a custom size.
- Set the orientation to Portrait.
- Choose how the content fits:
- Fit keeps the whole page visible and scales it down, leaving white space above and below. Best for documents and tables.
- Fill scales the page to cover the sheet and crops what overflows. Best for images where edges do not matter.
- Stretch fills the sheet exactly but distorts the content. Rarely what you want.
- Add a margin if you plan to print, check the preview and download.
The same tool works the other way too: set the orientation to Landscape to put portrait pages on wide sheets.
Per page orientation for mixed documents
If you want every page on the same paper size but each keeping its own direction, set the orientation to Same as each page. Landscape pages then get a landscape sheet and portrait pages a portrait sheet, all at A4 or Letter.
Rotate or resize: a quick comparison
| Rotate PDF | Resize PDF | |
|---|---|---|
| Turns the content | Yes, by 90 degrees | No |
| Changes the paper size | No | Yes (A4, Letter, custom) |
| Best for | Sideways scans, upside down pages | Wide slides, tables, portal size rules |
| Works on single pages | Yes | Applies to the whole file |
| Text stays selectable | Yes | Yes |
Change the orientation when printing only
If the PDF looks right on screen and only the printout is wrong, you do not need to edit the file. In the print dialog of your browser or PDF reader, set the layout or orientation to Portrait (or Auto) and turn on fit to page. Many printers default to the last orientation used, which is why one landscape job can make the next document print sideways.
You can also use Save as PDF in the print dialog to produce a new copy in the orientation you picked, but that route rebuilds the file and can lose links and bookmarks. Rotate PDF and Resize PDF keep them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Rotating when you should resize. If the text already reads correctly, rotating makes it sideways. Use Resize PDF instead.
- Using rotate all on a mixed file. Fix only the pages that are wrong.
- Rotating the view and closing the file. Viewer rotation is not saved. Download the rotated PDF.
- Shrinking text too far. A very wide landscape table on a portrait A4 page can become tiny. Try Letter or a custom size, or keep that page landscape with per page orientation.
- Forgetting the file size. Scans are heavy. After fixing the orientation, compress the PDF before emailing it.
Your files stay on your device
Rotate PDF and Resize PDF both run in your browser, so the document is never uploaded to a server. That matters for contracts, IDs, medical forms and anything else you would rather not send to a stranger's computer. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no page limit beyond what your device can handle.
Ready to fix your file? Open Rotate PDF for sideways pages, or Resize PDF to put landscape pages on portrait sheets.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change a PDF from landscape to portrait?
If the content is sideways, rotate the pages 90 degrees with Rotate PDF and download the file. If the content reads correctly but the page is wide, use Resize PDF, choose A4 or Letter, set the orientation to portrait and pick Fit so the whole page stays visible.
Can I rotate just one page in a PDF?
Yes. In Rotate PDF each page has its own rotate buttons, so you can turn a single page and leave the rest untouched. Download the file afterwards to save the change.
Why does my PDF go back to the old orientation when I reopen it?
You probably rotated the view in your PDF reader, which is not saved into the file. Rotate the pages with a tool that writes the rotation into the PDF, then save or download the new copy.
Will changing the orientation reduce quality?
No. Rotation only changes how the page is turned, and resizing scales the existing content without converting it to an image, so text stays sharp and selectable.
How do I print a landscape PDF in portrait?
In the print dialog, set the orientation to portrait and turn on fit to page or shrink to fit. The page is scaled down to fit upright on the paper. To get a portrait file you can keep, use Resize PDF instead.
