To convert a PDF to JPG, open a PDF to JPG converter, add your file, choose a resolution (150 DPI suits most uses), and download one JPG per page. The free PDF to JPG converter on WoowPDF does this in your browser, so the document is never uploaded, and it works the same on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.
Below are the browser method, the free built-in options on Mac and Windows, the settings that matter, and how to get images under a size limit.
Method 1: Convert PDF to JPG in your browser
- Open PDF to JPG on WoowPDF.
- Drop the PDF on the page or click to choose it.
- Pick a resolution: 72 DPI for a quick preview, 150 DPI for screens and email, 200 or 300 DPI for printing or reading small text.
- Set the JPG quality (90% is a good default) and choose All pages or Specific pages, for example
1, 3, 5-7. - Click Convert to images. Download each page on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Files are named document-page-1.jpg, document-page-2.jpg and so on, so the order is kept. The pages are drawn on a white background, because JPG has no transparency.
Method 2: Save a PDF as JPG on a Mac with Preview
Preview is built into macOS and handles one page at a time:
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Select the page you want in the sidebar.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG, move the Quality slider and set the Resolution (150 or 300 pixels per inch).
- Click Save.
Repeat for each page. For a long document the browser method is faster because it converts every page in one go.
Method 3: Windows options
Windows has no built-in PDF to JPG export. The common workarounds are:
- Snipping Tool: open the PDF in Edge, press Windows + Shift + S, snip the page and save it as JPG. Quick, but the resolution is limited to your screen.
- A browser converter: the WoowPDF tool runs in Edge or Chrome without installing anything, at up to 300 DPI.
- Paid editors such as Acrobat Pro can export to JPEG if you already have a licence.
How to convert PDF to JPG on iPhone and Android
Phones have no PDF to JPG button either, but the browser method works the same way on a phone:
- Save the PDF to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android). Attachments in Mail, WhatsApp and Gmail can be saved there from the share menu.
- Open PDF to JPG in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop area to pick the file.
- Keep 150 DPI for sharing, or choose 200 DPI if you will zoom in on small print.
- Convert, then tap a page to save it. On iPhone, open the image from Files and choose Save Image to put it in Photos; on Android the JPGs land in Downloads and show up in your gallery.
A quick alternative for a single page is a screenshot, but it captures your screen resolution and any toolbars, so the browser converter gives cleaner, sharper images. Large PDFs with hundreds of pages are easier on a computer, because a phone has less memory for rendering big pages at 300 DPI.
Which resolution and quality should you choose?
| Goal | DPI | Quality | Size per A4 page (typical) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preview, thumbnails, chat | 72 | 80% | Very small |
| Screen, email, websites | 150 | 85 to 90% | Small |
| Sharp text, slides, zooming in | 200 | 90% | Medium |
| Printing, OCR, archiving | 300 | 90 to 95% | Large |
At 150 DPI an A4 page becomes an image of about 1240 by 1754 pixels; at 300 DPI it is about 2480 by 3508 pixels, four times as many pixels. Text heavy pages with lots of white space compress very well, while scanned photos make much bigger files. If the result is too large, drop the DPI first, then the quality.
How to convert PDF to JPG under 50 KB
Exam, visa and job portals often ask for a JPG "under 50 KB" or "between 20 and 50 KB". Instead of guessing settings, use PDF to JPG under 50 KB:
- Add the PDF (a scanned certificate, ID or signature page).
- Set the target size; the default is 50 KB.
- Optionally switch to grayscale, which saves space on black and white documents.
- Convert. The tool searches for the highest quality that still fits, and only reduces the pixel size if it must.
Check the result before uploading: the text should still be readable when you zoom in.
JPG, PNG or another format?
| Format | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, scans, sharing, upload forms | Slight blur around sharp text at low quality |
| PNG | Text, diagrams, screenshots, transparency | Larger files for photos |
| Images in the PDF | Getting the original photos out | Only works if the PDF contains photos |
For crisp text and line art use PDF to PNG. To pull the original pictures out of a PDF without rendering whole pages, use Extract images from PDF. Our older guide on converting PDF to images compares all the image formats in more detail.
Common problems
- Blurry text: the DPI is too low. Use 200 or 300 DPI for documents you need to read.
- Huge files: 300 DPI and 100% quality are rarely needed. Try 150 DPI at 85%.
- Black background: some converters export transparent areas as black. WoowPDF fills pages with white before saving.
- Password protected PDF: you need the password to open it first; a converter cannot read a locked file.
- Need the images back in one PDF: use JPG to PDF to combine them again.
Converting PDF to JPG, in short
For most people the fastest route is the browser: open PDF to JPG, keep 150 DPI and 90% quality, pick your pages and download the ZIP. Nothing to install, no account, and the file stays on your device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to JPG for free?
Open a free converter such as WoowPDF PDF to JPG, add the file, choose a resolution and click convert. Each page becomes a JPG you can download one by one or as a ZIP. It runs in the browser, so there is no upload and no sign up.
How do I save only one page of a PDF as a JPG?
Choose Specific pages and type the page number, for example 3, or a range such as 2-4. On a Mac you can also select the page in Preview and use File > Export as JPEG.
What DPI should I use for PDF to JPG?
150 DPI is right for screens, email and most uploads. Use 200 or 300 DPI when you need to print, zoom into small text or run OCR, and 72 DPI only for thumbnails.
How do I convert a PDF to a JPG under 50 KB?
Use a tool with a target size, such as WoowPDF PDF to JPG under 50 KB. It lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file fits and only shrinks the pixels if needed. Grayscale helps for black and white documents.
Can I convert PDF to JPG on my phone?
Yes. Open the converter in Safari or Chrome on your phone, pick the PDF from Files or Downloads and save the JPGs. On iPhone they go to the Files app, from where you can save them to Photos.
