To compress a PDF to 100 KB, open Compress PDF to 100 KB, add the file, turn on grayscale if the page is black and white, and click Compress. The tool searches quality and resolution settings and keeps the sharpest version that fits under 100 KB, then shows whether the target was reached. Free, no sign up, no watermark.
100 KB is tight. A single phone scan is often 1 MB to 3 MB, so it has to lose 90 percent or more. The steps below show how to get there and still read every word.
Who asks for a PDF under 100 KB?
The 100 KB limit shows up most on exam registrations, recruitment portals and government services, where thousands of applicants upload a caste, income or domicile certificate, a marksheet, an ID proof or a signed declaration. It is meant for one document, usually one page. If your file has several pages, check whether the form really wants them all in one upload.
How to compress a PDF to 100 KB (step by step)
- Open Compress PDF to 100 KB. The target is already 100 KB.
- Add your PDF.
- Turn on grayscale for black and white documents. At 100 KB this matters more than any other setting: colour data costs space that a marksheet does not need.
- Click Compress. The tool tries several quality and DPI combinations, which can take a minute for large scans.
- Read the result line. Target 100 KB: reached means it fits; download and upload it.
The result stays at or under 100 x 1,024 bytes, so it passes portals that count a KB as 1,000 bytes as well as those that count 1,024.
How many pages fit in 100 KB?
Think of the limit as a budget per page.
| Document | Pages | Fits in 100 KB? |
|---|---|---|
| Typed letter or form exported from Word | 1 to 5 | Usually yes, often with room to spare |
| Clean grayscale scan of a certificate | 1 | Yes |
| Grayscale scan | 2 | Often, if the scan is clean |
| Colour scan with photo or stamp | 1 | Possible, with some softening |
| Scanned pages | 3 or more | Rarely readable; remove or split pages |
Digital PDFs are mostly text, which takes very little space. Scans are pictures, and every scanned page shares the same 100 KB.
Scan settings that make 100 KB easy
The smartest compression starts before the PDF exists. A clean, small scan reaches 100 KB with little visible loss; a dark 12 megapixel photo of a page does not.
- Scan in grayscale or black and white when the document has no colour that matters.
- Use 150 DPI. It is sharp enough to read on screen and print, and far smaller than 300 or 600 DPI.
- Crop to the page edges. The table, your fingers and shadows are wasted pixels.
- Use daylight or a bright lamp. Noise from dim light turns into extra file size.
- On a phone, use a document scanner, not the camera. On iPhone, the Files app has Scan Documents in its menu; on Android, Google Drive has Scan under the + button. Both crop and flatten the page.
How the target size search works
Typical compressors offer Low, Medium and Strong, and leave you to try again when the file is still 140 KB. WoowPDF takes the limit as the goal:
- It recompresses the images in the PDF at a range of JPEG quality and resolution settings.
- It keeps the highest quality result that is still under 100 KB, not the smallest possible file.
- It stops when further compression no longer helps, for example when fonts or vector drawings, not images, make up the size.
What if the PDF still will not go under 100 KB?
- More than one scanned page. Remove extras with Delete PDF Pages, or Split PDF into single pages if the portal allows several uploads.
- The scan is huge to begin with. Rescan at 150 DPI in grayscale, then compress again.
- Fonts and graphics, not images. Save the file again from the program that made it, or print it to PDF with standard fonts.
- The portal wants an image, not a PDF. Some forms ask for a JPG under a limit instead. PDF to JPG under 50 KB handles that case directly.

Common mistakes with 100 KB uploads
- Compressing a photo of the page instead of a scan. Camera photos include the desk, shadows and a tilt. A scanner app crops and flattens the page first, which saves far more space than any compression level.
- Leaving colour on for a black and white page. Colour roughly triples what each pixel costs. Grayscale is the easiest saving there is.
- Uploading the whole document when one page is asked for. If the form asks for the certificate, upload the certificate page, not the cover sheet and the back as well.
- Compressing twice. Running a file through compressors again and again blurs it each time. Start from the original scan and compress once to the exact target.
- Trusting the name of the file. Check the real size in your file manager before uploading.
Different size limit?
Use Compress PDF to 500 KB for multi page applications, Compress PDF to 300 KB for mid sized caps, or the main Compress PDF tool for any target from 10 KB to 100 MB. If the portal sets a minimum too and your file is now under it, Increase PDF Size raises it without changing the page.
Is it safe to compress certificates online?
Certificates and IDs are personal, so this matters. Target size compression runs on our server over an encrypted connection, and the file is deleted as soon as your result is returned. Nothing is kept or shared. Upload only the pages the form needs, so less personal data travels at all.
Ready? Open Compress PDF to 100 KB, add your document and get a file the portal accepts the first time.
Frequently asked questions
How can I reduce my PDF size to below 100 KB?
Open WoowPDF's Compress PDF to 100 KB, add the file, turn on grayscale for black and white pages and click Compress. The tool finds the best quality that fits under 100 KB, so you do not have to try levels one by one.
Why is my one page PDF so large?
It is almost always a scan or phone photo saved at high resolution and in colour. Each page is then a large image. Rescanning at 150 DPI in grayscale, or compressing with a target size, brings it down quickly.
Will text be readable at 100 KB?
For one or two grayscale pages, yes. Typed digital text stays perfectly sharp. Colour scans and several scanned pages are where readability starts to suffer.
How do I compress a PDF to 100 KB on my phone?
Scan the document with the Files app on iPhone or Google Drive on Android, open the WoowPDF tool in your browser, add the PDF, turn on grayscale and tap Compress. Then save the result and upload it.
Is the 100 KB PDF compressor free?
Yes. There is no sign up and no watermark, and files are deleted right after compression.
