Repairing Corrupted PDFs

PDFs get corrupted in various ways: incomplete downloads, transfer errors, storage issues, software problems can make them unreadable. When you encounter a PDF that won't open, shows errors or displays wrong, this might help. The tool rebuilds the internal structure of the damaged file and writes out a fresh, working copy with everything that is still readable.

Upload Damaged File

Click upload. Pick your corrupted PDF that won't open properly, or several at once. Accepts PDFs up to 100 MB each. Shows filename and size. Each file is checked to be a real PDF before it is sent for repair.

What Gets Checked

What the repair looks at:

• Structure: rebuilds cross-reference tables and object streams
• Objects: rewrites every readable object into a clean file
• Broken references: fixes wrong object positions and offsets

What the Repair Does

One click does the essential work:

• Fix corruption: rebuild damaged structure and cross-reference tables
• Keep content: pages, text, images, links and bookmarks that are still readable are kept

Settings

No settings needed:

• Just add the file and click Repair PDF

If the PDF needs a password to open, unlock it first with Remove PDF Password, using the password you know.

Start Repair

Click "Repair PDF". Tool will:

• Send the file to our server over an encrypted connection
• Read the damaged file with the qpdf engine
• Rebuild the cross-reference table and object streams
• Write a new PDF from the readable data

Progress

While it works:

• Uploading: the file is sent securely
• Repairing: the structure is rebuilt on our server

Result

After completion:

• A repaired copy is ready to download
• If the file is too badly damaged, the tool tells you it could not be processed

Download Repaired File

When successful:

• Click download to save repaired file
• New PDF has "-repaired" added to filename
• Original corrupted file untouched
• Test repaired PDF to ensure it opens correctly

Common Corruption

Can repair PDFs damaged by:

• Incomplete downloads: stopped midway (complete pages are kept)
• Transfer errors: corruption during email or network transfer
• Storage issues: files from failing hard drives
• Software crashes: saved during application crashes
• Format conversion errors: issues from other conversions
• Export bugs: files written incorrectly by other software

Limitations

Note that:

• Severely damaged files may have partial recovery only
• Some formatting might be simplified
• Very old PDF formats may have limited repair options
• Works best with partially corrupted files rather than completely unreadable ones

After Repair

Once you have repaired PDF:

• Open in multiple PDF readers to test compatibility
