Chat with PDF: Ask Your Document Anything
Ask questions about any PDF and get answers with page citations. Free AI PDF chat, no sign-up: find facts, dates and key points in seconds.
The text is read from your PDF in your browser. Only that text is sent to our AI server, and it is not stored.
How to chat with a PDF
Reading a 40 page contract, a research paper or a long report just to find one date or one rule takes time. Chat with PDF lets you ask the document directly. Type a question in plain words, such as "When does the notice period start?" or "What were the main results?", and the AI answers from the text of your PDF, citing the page of every fact so you can check it in a second. It is free, it needs no account, and it works on contracts, manuals, invoices, study notes, research papers, policies and reports.
How to chat with a PDF
- Open your PDF. Drop the file onto the page or click Choose PDF. The text is read in your browser and the page and word count appear.
- Ask a question. Type it in the box or start with a suggested question like What is this document about?
- Read the cited answer. Page chips such as p. 4 show where each fact comes from. Click one to see the exact passage.
- Keep the conversation going. Ask follow-up questions, copy any answer, or clear the chat and open another PDF.
What you can ask
Use it to find facts ("What is the total amount due?"), explain a section in simpler words, compare what two chapters say, list every deadline, pull out names, figures and definitions, or check whether a topic is covered at all. If the answer is not in the document, the assistant tells you so instead of guessing. You can ask in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese or many other languages and receive the answer in the same language, even when the PDF is written in another one.

How it works and what happens to your text
The PDF never leaves your device as a file. Your browser extracts the text of each page and builds a small search index locally. For every question it picks the most relevant excerpts and sends only those, labelled with their page numbers, to our own AI server over an encrypted connection. The model is told to use nothing but those excerpts, to cite pages and to ignore any instructions hidden in the document. The text is used to write the answer and is not saved, logged as content or used for training.
Tips for better answers
- Be specific: "What is the penalty for late payment in section 7?" works better than "Tell me about payments".
- Scanned document? Make it readable with PDF OCR first.
- Need the whole picture rather than one fact? Use the PDF Summarizer.
- Document in a language you do not read? Translate the PDF, or simply ask your questions in your own language here.
- Very long file? Split the PDF and chat with the chapter you need.
- Locked file? Remove the password you know, then open it again.

Frequently asked questions
How does Chat with PDF work?
Your browser reads the text of the PDF page by page. When you ask a question, it finds the passages that match best and sends only those excerpts to our AI model, which answers from them and cites the page numbers it used.
Is my PDF uploaded or stored?
The file itself never leaves your device. Only the text excerpts needed for each question are sent over an encrypted connection to our AI server, used to write the answer and then discarded. Nothing is saved and no account is needed.
Can the AI make things up?
It is instructed to answer only from your document and to say when the answer is not in it. AI can still misread a passage, so every answer cites its pages and you can open the quoted text with one click to check it.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages, not text, so there is nothing to read. Run it through PDF OCR first to add a text layer, then open the new file here.
How long can the PDF be?
The first 60 pages, up to about 200,000 characters, are read. For longer files, split the PDF and chat with the part you need. Questions can be up to 500 characters.
Which languages are supported?
The document can be in most languages, including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi and Chinese. Ask in your own language and the answer comes back in that language, even if the PDF is written in another one.
