How to convert PDF to EPUB

Reading a PDF on a phone or an e-reader means pinching, zooming and scrolling sideways on every page. PDF to EPUB turns the document into a real e-book: the text is extracted, its structure is rebuilt and it is packaged as a reflowable EPUB 3 file that adapts to any screen, font and text size. You get chapters, a table of contents, the pictures from the PDF and, if you want, the first page as the cover.

How to convert PDF to EPUB

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it onto the page or click Choose file.
  2. Choose where chapters start. At each heading for books and reports, or at each page for documents without headings.
  3. Keep the cover and images switched on, or off for a text only e-book.
  4. Set the title and author under Advanced options if the PDF properties are empty.
  5. Convert and open the .epub file in your reading app.

Built to the standard

The file follows EPUB 3: the mimetype entry comes first and uncompressed, the package has a container, an OPF manifest with a unique identifier, language and modification date, a navigation document and an NCX table of contents for older readers. Text is written as valid XHTML with a light style sheet that leaves fonts and spacing to the reader. The language is detected from the text, and Arabic books read right to left.

Private by design

All of this happens in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded, and the EPUB is created on your device.

Who uses it

Students reading course packs on a tablet, commuters who want reports and manuals on a phone, people with low vision who need large text that reflows, authors sharing manuscripts with beta readers, and anyone who prefers an e-reader to a laptop screen. Text documents such as novels, essays, reports and handbooks convert best. Layout heavy files like magazines, comics, forms or slide decks are better kept as PDF, because their meaning depends on the exact page design. For those, try the result first: you can always convert again with one chapter per page if the headings were not clear enough.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert a PDF to EPUB?

A PDF has fixed pages, so on a phone or a 6 inch e-reader you have to zoom and scroll. An EPUB reflows the text to fit the screen, lets you change the font size and remembers where you stopped.

How are chapters created?

With Each heading, the converter detects headings from font sizes and starts a new chapter at every top level heading. With Each page, every PDF page becomes its own chapter, which suits documents without clear headings.

Does it keep images and tables?

Yes. Pictures are extracted and placed in the text where they appear, and tables are rebuilt as real tables. Complex magazine layouts may need small corrections.

Will it open on Kindle?

Recent Kindle apps and devices accept EPUB through Send to Kindle, which converts it for you. Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, PocketBook, Calibre and most other readers open EPUB directly.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

A scan only contains pictures of pages, so there is no text to reflow. Run it through PDF OCR first, then convert the result here.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The text is extracted and the EPUB is packaged in your browser. The file stays on your device and nothing is stored.
