How to split PDF pages in half

When you scan a book or magazine on a flatbed scanner, each PDF page usually holds two pages side by side. The same happens with two-up handouts and some exported presentations. Split PDF in half cuts every page down the middle so each half becomes its own page, in the right reading order. You can cut left and right or top and bottom, keep a cover page whole, and switch the order for right to left books. The split is lossless and runs entirely in your browser.

How to split PDF pages in half

  1. Add your PDF. Drop the scan or document on the page.
  2. Choose the cut. Left and right for book spreads, Top and bottom for pages printed two per sheet vertically.
  3. Optional settings. Keep the first page whole if it is a single cover, and choose Right half first for right to left books.
  4. Split and download. A 50 page scan becomes a 100 page PDF (or 99 with a cover kept whole).

Lossless splitting explained

Many online tools split pages by turning them into pictures and cutting the pictures, which blurs text and removes the text layer. WoowPDF copies each page twice and changes the visible area (the crop and media box) of each copy. Nothing is redrawn, so text stays sharp and searchable, links keep working and images keep their original resolution.

Clean up your scan

  • Straighten or rotate first. If some pages are upside down or sideways, fix them with Rotate PDF before splitting.
  • Trim borders. Remove the dark scanner edge with Crop PDF.
  • Make it smaller. Each half still carries the full page data, so run Compress PDF afterwards for email.
  • Remove extra pages. Delete blank or duplicate halves with Delete PDF Pages.

Splitting files versus splitting pages

This tool cuts each page into two. If you want to break a PDF into several files instead, for example chapters or every 10 pages, use Split PDF. Both are free and private.

Private by design

Your scan is processed by JavaScript on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged, and there is no watermark or account.

Common reasons to split pages in half

Students scan library books two pages at a time to save time, then need single pages to read on a phone or tablet. Offices receive two-up printouts that cannot be annotated page by page. Comic and manga fans scan double spreads, and archivists digitize old ledgers that were photographed open. In each case one clean cut down the middle turns the file into normal pages that read, print and search correctly.

Features

  • Cut every page into left and right halves, or top and bottom halves
  • Lossless: pages are cropped, not re-rendered, so text and images stay sharp
  • Keep the first page whole for covers
  • Right half first for books read right to left
  • Handles rotated pages so the halves come out in reading order
  • Runs in your browser: your scan is never uploaded

Frequently asked questions

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. The tool does not turn pages into images. It copies each page twice and sets a new visible area on each copy, so text stays selectable and images keep their full resolution.

Why is the file size almost the same?

Because each half still contains the original page content; the other half is simply hidden. That is what keeps it lossless. If you need a smaller file, run Compress PDF afterwards.

My scan has a cover on page 1. Will it be cut?

Turn on "Keep the first page whole" and the first page is copied unchanged, while all the other pages are split.

The halves come out in the wrong order. What do I do?

For books that read from right to left, such as Arabic, Hebrew or Japanese, turn on "Right half first". For pages scanned upside down, rotate them first with Rotate PDF.

Can I split only some pages?

The tool splits every page except an optional cover. To split a few pages only, extract them first, split them, then merge the parts back together.

Is it free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign up, and everything happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
